French President Francois Hollande confirmed on Friday that a large-scale counterterrorist operation in Brussels was directly related to the terrorist attacks that had hit Paris in November 2015.

PARIS (Sputnik) – There is no confirmation, at this point, that the main suspect in last fall’s Paris terrorist attacks, Salah Abdeslam, has been arrested in the special units’ operation, he noted.

"It's true: the operation [in Brussels] is connected with Paris attacks," Hollande said at the EU summit in the Belgian capital.

Earlier in the day, Belgian media reported that Abdeslam had been detained in the Brussels commune of Molenbeek.

Belgian police raided the notorious Molenbeek neighborhood after fingerprints of Paris attacks fugitive Salah Abdeslam had been found in a Brussels apartment.

On November 13, a series of coordinated attacks at several locations in the French capital killed at least 130 people and injured over 360. Daesh claimed responsibility for the attacks.
