BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The European Union’s recently concluded agreement to curb undocumented migration into the bloc is a breakthrough that would achieve pragmatic results, European Council President Donald Tusk said Friday.
"For sure this is a breakthrough when it comes to our relations between the EU and Turkey, and also a breakthrough when it comes to our main goal to stop irregular – irregular, I want to underline – migration to Europe," Tusk told reporters.
Ankara and Brussels hammered out the provisional deal on the second day of the EU Council, envisioning a one-for-one exchange of illegal migrants crossing the seas into Europe for approved Syrian refugees housed in Turkey.
"Today, this is one of the most important achievements we could ever expect. I deeply believe that pragmatic results would be significant," Tusk emphasized alongside European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
