The German chancellor has been discontent with those EU members, who oppose taking in refugees. "It's not an honor for Europe that the union of 28 member states with 500 million citizens has so far found it so difficult to equally share the burden," she said earlier this week.
Merkel's stance is understandable, because her strategy will only work if everyone is on board.
But the biggest flaw with the Merkel's plan is that it is not "convincing enough, probably, because in the early stages of the crisis Merkel treated refugees as if she were Mother Teresa," the German newspaper noted.
The fact that the chancellor cares for "the EU's honor and compassion," the FAZ believes, "deserves praise, but this way she also reminds her partners of Germany's moral imperative."
