Scottish Police Arrest Knife-Wielding Man Near School

A man armed with knives has been arrested in the Scottish city of Glasgow after forcing a school into lockdown, local media reported Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Parents were ordered to keep their children inside St Aloysius' College as police pursued a man roaming the area wielding two meat cleavers, the STV news channel reported.

The man was detained with the help of the school's janitors, with one police officer suffering minor injuries during the arrest, according to the media outlet.

Prior to the capture, the man reportedly attacked a school janitor and several women. The women alerted police from a nearby store, according to the store owner, as quoted by the channel.

Scottish police have confirmed the arrest, which took place after 8:30 a.m. local time, the outlet said.

The rate of crimes involving what is termed in UK law as offensive weapons, or tools made or adapted for the purpose of inflicting either mental or physical injury on another person, including knives, has been in decline in Scotland. In late 2015, the Scottish government revealed that such crimes were at their lowest since 1984, having fallen 67 percent since 2007.
