Major Migrant Crisis in Europe (1819)

Hungary is ready to begin building a fence on its border with Romania should refugees attempt to enter the country through that direction, Interior Minister Sandor Pinter said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Undocumented migrants were not yet coming from the direction of Romania, but if that were to happen, construction of the fence on the border between the two countries could be initiated within 10 days, the HVG weekly reported citing Pinter.

The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The EU border agency Frontex recorded more than 1.8 million illegal border crossings in the bloc in 2015.

In response to the growing number of migrants reaching their territories, several EU states, such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovenia, which are used primarily as a transit routes by refugees, have built fences on their borders.

Hungary to Deploy Army, Police to Protect Border From Migrants

Hungary will be deploying police and army to its borders amid the European migration crisis, Sandor Pinter announced according to the MNO newspaper.

The decisions follow Monday's EU-Turkey summit that resulted in an agreement putting an end to the Balkan route used by migrants to travel through Greece and Macedonia to wealthier EU states.

Under the deal, Turkey pledges to take back all illegal migrants that arrive to the European Union through its border and in their place send legal Syrian refugees to the bloc on one-for-one basis. A final agreement is expected to be reached by the next summit on March 17-18.
