PACE, EU Officials to Take Part in Death Penalty Conference in Minsk

European Union human rights envoy Stavros Lambrinidis will take part in an international conference on the death penalty, which will take place in Minsk on March 10 during his three-day working visit to Belarus, according to the Delegation of the European Union to Belarus.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — European Union human rights envoy Stavros Lambrinidis and Andrea Rigoni, a representative of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), are due to take part in a conference on the death penalty in Minsk on March 10, the Delegation of the European Union to Belarus stated on Saturday.

Belarus remains the only European country that has a death penalty.

"[Lambrinidis] will also take part in an international conference on the death penalty that will take place in Minsk on March 10. The conference is being organized by the UN Office in Belarus with the financial assistance of the British Embassy in Belarus," the statement read.

Earlier in the day, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Lambrinidis was due to pay a three-day working visit to the country.
