The German government has no reason to doubt the fact that the treatment of refugees in the French port city of Calais complies with legal standards, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — The operation to dismantle the sprawling "Jungle" tent camp in Calais began, on Monday, after municipal authorities were granted permission to do so by a local court. The authorities estimate that between 800 and 1,000 migrants had been living in the southern part of the camp. On Tuesday, migrants began to set their shelters on fire in protest.

"As for Calais, I can only say that we believe that the hosting of refugees is conducted on a legal basis. We have no reason to doubt that in Calais it happens differently," Seibert said at a briefing.

Calais is hosting thousands of refugees who seek to travel via the Channel Tunnel to the United Kingdom where they intend to apply for asylum.
