MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A referendum on whether to accept the mandatory migrant quota set by the European Union may be held in Hungary not sooner than in five months' time, Hungarian Justice Minister Laszlo Trocsanyi said Friday.
"The referendum may be held not earlier than in 150 days. [But] no later than in 250 days," Trocsanyi said at a conference.
The Hungarian government on Wednesday called a national referendum in which Hungarians will vote on the EU plan for mandatory quotas to resettle migrants throughout the bloc. The referendum proposal has already been submitted for approval to the National Election Commission.
On Thursday, the head of Department of Communication and International Relations at the National Elections Office, Listar Daniel, told Sputnik that the referendum might be held this fall.
Under the scheme set out by the European Commission, Hungary is be obliged to take in 2,300 refugees over the next two years.
