BELGRADE (Sputnik) On February 18, police chiefs of Slovenia and Croatia, as well as Austria, Serbia and Macedonia, agreed to strengthen border control on the West Balkan migration route and to introduce a new system of migrant registration.

"The night before, we received a notification from the Croatian police, which they had received from the Slovenian police, that the new [border] regime is implemented. Now Slovenia and Croatia will accept no more than 500 migrants a day," Stefanovic said.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries to escape violence and poverty. Many of them take the West Balkan route to reach wealthier EU states where they intend to apply for asylum.
