'Lying Press!' Half of Germans Turns Away From Mainstream Media

Europe Sees Wave of Sex Attacks Amid Migrant Crisis (40)

Mainstream media coverage of the notorious Cologne sex attacks has enraged many Germans, marking a turning point for an increasing dissatisfaction in the work of journalists across the country and a loss of faith in mainstream news outlets.

The distorted view of the refugee crisis given by German media is the  main cause of a soaring public backlash, a report by Spiegel revealed.

The Allensbach Institute, a renowned polling company in Germany, issued a survey calculating that only 25 percent of Germans said they trust what media report about refugee women and children arriving to the country.

According to a recent national poll, almost 50 percent of Germans have "little trust" in the media. The level of distrust varies from “healthy skepticism” to calls to “get out the pitchforks to chase journalists out of newspaper offices.” But what’s more alarming, according to Spiegel, is that the amount of radicalized people dissatisfied with media is rapidly growing.

A common example of this shift is Isolde Beck, a German pensioner, who turned away from acknowledged media sources in the wake of the Cologne sex attacks. After shocking details of the New Year’s Eve incident were covered up by the media, she said that reporters have lost the ability to "articulate certain things," adding that the "news is being suppressed."

"We can no longer assume that there is a democracy or even freedom of expression in this country anymore," Beck wrote in a letter he sent to Spiegel editorial office.

Many believe that the federal government presses journalists to not tell the truth. It is widely known that Chancellor Angela Merkel invited representatives from main news outlets to the Chancellery. Some Germans are assured that reporters were ordered to hide the truth, at the beginning of the refugee crisis.

"I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I do believe we're really being taken for a ride," Philipp Karger, a 33-year-old engineer, said on beliefs that media organizations are paid by politicians to conceal the truth.

Siegfried Vollmert, 57, of Essen, has another take on the problem, suggesting that media have lost their connection to their readership. Vollmert underscored that reporters should focus on social problems, including teacher shortage, poor hygiene in hospitals, and a growing number of burglaries, rather than on refugees.

"The press has allowed itself to be misused by politics and its mission of political correctness," Vollmer asserted. "They don't listen to what's happening down below."

Armin Wolf, an Austrian TV host, agreed with the criticism and observed that something must be done about it.

"The fact that journalists are not as present where society needs those most — there's something to that," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the levels of hatred and impatience toward media and journalists are mounting in society.

Internet posts by German national Uwe Ostertag called the media reporters "rats," "zombies," and "cockroaches," and said they all need to be "destroyed by the exterminator,” in a viral post.

The more concerning fact is that some verbal abuse is now being voiced not only in the Internet, but in real life as well.

A popular German journalist, Dunja Hayali, who received a German film and television honor the Golden Camera, was subjected to verbal abuse on the street. A cyclist passing her by in the run-up to the award ceremony, stopped and shouted in her face: “Lying press! You liar!"

Omissions in the western media of any kind of real biting questions leaves a person dumber than they were before watching the news. That's the elephant in the room in U.S. society. That complete aloofness that journalist and news reporters seem to have in the U.S. when it comes to common sense and asking intelligent questions. Where are all of the nerdy types who dissect every word or line of reasoning? Where are the real thinkers in the U.S.? By all appearances, if the media is any indication, there must not be but a handful. I know otherwise, but still, western media puts me to sleep. No hard hitting questions. Ever.

The educated people of Europe have to see the common pattern of news "coverage" which is the same as propaganda against the people. The news has a single sourse. No need to apologize for conspiracy theories, because this is conspiracy evidence.

This article makes the readers think the refugee crisis is the reason of Germans waking up to the subversive nature of their media. But that is not part of the coverage. It seems to be this article's author's choice. Germans have known about this problem for at least a decade. When a journalist tucks in his idea with the facts on the ground to funnel the conclusion to a certain direction, now that is why people turn away from media.

Western media generally is an entertainment show - nicely packaged magazine style. Nothing to make anyone choke on the morning cornflakes.

A large concern is when the global elite start making noises about controlling the internet. Some time back John Kerry had requested that the internet be put into the hands of the UN.

And not just in Germany, but worldwide - many people are simply and rightfully fed up with the mainstream media. In the USA most people follow alternative media, largely on the Internet. Network television is dying out, as is cable TV. Newspapers and magazines are also not doing well - one exception among "old media" is radio, which is still doing okay.

This is happening in all western countries and have been happening for some time now. Anchors assure that their news have been verified before submission. I respect this. However, they select the news to be promulgated. In North America, recently, I noticed much time have been spent on depicting, quite vividly, the utter miseries of the refugees and the deep tolerance of western governments. However, no mention of the actions of non-western countries to bring about the reduction in numbers of these self-same refugees at the doorstep of the West. With regards the war in Syria and Iraq, if the us forces does something spectacular, which is a rare case scenario, it is news and if, without confirmation, something is said of a non-western country that is negative, it is breaking news.
He that knoweth not and knoweth not that he knoweth not is a fool.
The west think that the people can be easily fooled for they knoweth not that they knoweth not.

No intelligent person reads western media nowadays. If they read it it is just to get updated on the lies they spread. US-Nato in collaboration with western media is an outright crime syndicate. They lie on a Daily bases and now also ordinary people are waking up to this fact. There is no democracy without free media. We live more or less in dictatorships in EU
In fact western media is worse than the propaganda in former USSR.

I totally agree. Even in former Soviet block countries the lies were more intelligent than the crap served by nowadays Western media. Some people even say before we were looking for the truth at Radio Free Europe or Voice of America, now at RT or Sputnick.

UN slams airstrike on water treatment facility in Syria’s Aleppo

Will that create more refugees? ... yep, that's the plan. Then Putin will be blamed for the consequences

The US is an old hand at bombing civilian water supply -- did it in Iraq, and Libya, and now Syria. It takes out electricity, schools, and medical facilities too -- all sorts of civilian stuff. All war crimes, of course, but what does the US care about that as long as it destroys countries and throw them into chaos? That's the purpose. 'Empire of Chaos' as Pepe Escobar terms it.
