The intention of the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to replace the country's Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin shows just how serious Kiev is about implementing reforms, US Department of State deputy spokesperson Mark Toner stated in a press briefing.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Poroshenko said in a statement he had asked Shokin to resign from his post.

"The announcement to replace him [Shokin] we believe is a signal of Ukraine’s seriousness about its reform process," Toner stated.

He maintained that such actions are important in restoring the confidence of the Ukrainian people in the country’s justice system.

"[B]ut clearly, there is an immense amount of work yet to be done in countering corruption including in prosecutorial service," Toner noted.

The United States, Toner added, is also closely watching developments in Ukraine’s government and parliament.

On Tuesday, Poroshenko’s spokesman Svyatoslav Tsegolko said the Ukrainian president asked the country's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk to resign.

The Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction in the Ukrainian parliament said it considered the work of the Ukrainian government in 2015 unsatisfactory, and would support the vote to dissolve the government.
