Some 62 percent of Scots would support the UK remaining in the bloc in a referendum, with 26 percent supporting Brexit, while 12 percent are undecided, according to the poll.

MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — About 60 percent of Scots think that Scotland should be independent from the United Kingdom if Britain leaves the European Union, a STV News poll reveled Wednesday.

The poll results suggest that some 62 percent would support the UK remaining in the bloc in a referendum, with 26 percent supporting Brexit, while 12 percent are undecided.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to renegotiate the terms of the United Kingdom's membership of the bloc. Its membership of the 28-nation bloc will be put to vote no later than by the end 2017. Cameron said the government’s position was to campaign for Britain to stay in the European Union but on better terms.

Earlier, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said that the Scottish people will insist on a second referendum on independence from the United Kingdom if Britain votes to leave the European Union.

On September 18, 2014, Scotland held a nationwide vote on the country’s independence from the United Kingdom. Over 55 percent of voters supported Scotland remaining within the UK.

The Scotland National Party (SNP) which was behind the independence vote, pledged Scotland would remain in the European Union in the event of secession from the United Kingdom.
