Security in war-torn eastern Ukraine continues to deteriorate, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) envoy to Ukraine Martin Sajdik told reporters on Wednesday.

OSCE Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Should Keep Existing Mandate Unchanged
MINSK (Sputnik) A Trilateral Contact Group met in the Belarusian capital of Minsk earlier in the day to discuss security in Donetsk and Lugansk regions, a battleground for Ukrainian troops and anti-government militias for nearly two years.

"The general security situation in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine, which continues to deteriorate, dominated the discussion," Martin Sajdik said at a press conference in Minsk.

He cited Ertugrul Apakan, chief monitor with the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, who had urged both sides to the armed conflict to deliver on their pledges to uphold the ceasefire and withdraw heavy weapons from the line of conflict.

The Trilateral Contact Group is composed of Ukrainian, Russian and OSCE representatives who have been tasked with enhancing the implementation of the Minsk peace agreements of September 2014 and February 2015.
