BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The European Commission (EC) is preparing readmission agreements with Pakistan and Morocco for migrants posing as asylum seekers, European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said Monday.
"We are working right now with third countries on signing readmission agreements. I was recently in Pakistan, I was in Morocco," Avramopoulos said at a press conference, adding that an action plan is active with Turkey.
Irregular migrants outside the asylum framework "have to go back home," he reiterated.
Refugee registration centres in Greece and Italy will step up efforts to discern economic migrants from refugees, Avramopoulos added.
Over 1.2 million irregular migrants have been detected crossing the EU border last year, according to the European external border protection agency Frontex.
