MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Independent newspaper, Jack Letts, a 20-year-old man, who has also been known as Ibrahim or Abu Muhammed after having converted to Islam, traveled from the British city of Oxford to Daesh-occupied part of Syria in 2014.
The newspaper added that Letts' school friends classified him as "the classroom clown," however several of schoolmates called him "Jihadi Jack."
Daesh is a terrorist group, outlawed in many countries including the United Kingdom, Russia and the United States. The group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq, and declared a caliphate there under the rule of Sharia law.
According to UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, some 1,500 Britons have tried to enter Daesh-controlled parts of Syria, while about 800 of them succeeded.
