Edwards was on assignement for RT UK when he arrived at the Calais camp on Friday morning. He was preparing a report on child refugees who have allegedly been attacked by police while at the camp, when the incident occurred.
The journalist managed to escape and found refuge near the camp's entrance, the channel said. No police were on site to assist him during the incident.
Up to 6,000 migrants have been camping out for months on the outskirts of Calais, seeking to cross the Channel Tunnel and apply for asylum in the United Kingdom. At least 16 migrants have been killed while attempting to make the crossing in or near the tunnel since June 2015.
