Cameron Calls on EU to ‘Carve’ Britain Out of Ever-Closer Union Scheme

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has called for Britain’s exemption from the EU principle of an ever-closer political union, saying London wanted to get its relationship with Brussels right.

DAVOS (Sputnik) — Britain is currently rethinking its relationship with the 28-nation bloc ahead of a referendum on its membership in the European Union, which is due to take place by the end of 2017.

"Britain has never been happy with the idea that we are part of an ever-closer political union. We are a proud and independent country with proud independent democratic institutions that have served us well," Cameron said.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Cameron said he wanted to "carve Britain out of the idea of an ever-closer union."

"If Europe is an ever-deepening political union with ever-deepening political institutions, then it is not the organization for us," he maintained, saying his country wanted to see change in the area of sovereignty.

He added, however, that Britain considered itself an "enthusiast" for economic, foreign policy and climate change cooperation within the bloc and wanted to secure its future in a reformed European Union.
