CHISINAU (Sputnik) — The Moldovan capital of Chisinau continues to witness protests against President Nicolae Timofti's decision to nominate Pavel Filip, the minister of informational technologies and communications and member of the ruling Democratic Party, for the post of the country’s prime minister. A corresponding decree was signed on Wednesday.
"About 5,000 supporters of the socialist party, Our Party and Civic Platform Dignity and Truth (DA) right-centrist movement have gathered in the square in front of the parliament," the source told RIA Novosti.
The protest is peaceful, according to the source. The opposition says "it does not call for violence."
"Our task is to urge all Moldova's citizens, regardless of their nationality, to unite and achieve the staging of early parliamentary election. Today, all the opposition leaders are invited to a discussion with Parliamentary Speaker Andrian Candu," the leader of the opposition Our Party, Renato Usatii, told the activists.
Since early September 2015, major anti-government protests have gripped the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. Activists have been demanding the resignation of the Moldovan president, prime minister and the chief prosecutor, while also calling for early parliamentary elections and prompt action to tackle corruption.
