Bavaria’s migration-skeptic Prime Minister Horst Seehofer said Saturday that he would file a lawsuit in Germany’s Constitutional Court if Chancellor Angela Merkel fails to restore contol over Germany's borders.

BERLIN, January 16 (Sputnik) — Authorities in the southern German state of Bavaria threatened in October to take the federal government to court if it did not manage to curb the record inflow of refugees into the country.

"In the next 14 days we will officially demand from the federal government to reintroduce certain legal relations on the borders," Seehofer told the German Der Spiegel newspaper, adding that "the Bavarian government will have no other choice than to appeal to the Constitutional Court if it fails to do so."

Seehofer has been firmly opposed to Merkel’s refugee policy. Earlier this month, he said that Germany could cope with no more than 200,000 arrivals a year.

Germany has been the main destination for thousands of refugees and immigrants coming to Europe since the start of 2015. Bavaria, the key gateway to Germany for those arriving in southern Europe, saw the average of 4,000 new arrivals a day in December.
