More than 20,000 activists gathered in the capital of Moldova on Saturday for anti-government protests, local police estimated.

CHISINAU (Sputnik) – The demonstrations were organized by the Socialist Party of Moldova, Our Party and the Civic Platform DA, protesting against the proposal to nominate Pavel Filip, the minister of informational technologies and communications, to be the next Moldovan prime minister.

The protests are taking place at the square at the Moldova’s parliament in downtown Chisinau. Police sealed off the area to prevent clashes between the center-leftists and the center-right Civic Platform DA.

Filip was appointed candidate for the post of prime minister on Friday, after his candidature won support from 55 out of 101 lawmakers.

The leader of opposition Our Party, Renato Usatii, called this decision of the ruling Democratic Party a "coup" and "usurpation of power."

Since early September 2015, major anti-government protests have gripped the Moldovan capital of Chisinau. Activists have been demanding the resignation of the Moldovan president, the prime minister and the chief prosecutor, while also calling for early parliamentary elections and prompt action to tackle corruption.

Moldova has entered the new year without constant government amid a deep political crisis in the country.
