Estonian Parliament Allows 16-Year-Olds to Vote in Local Elections

The Estonian parliament on Thursday adopted the Bill on Amendments to the Local Government Council Election Act, lowering the voting age for local elections from 18 to 16, the parliament said in a press release.

TALLINN (Sputnik) — According to the press release, 89 out of the total 101 lawmakers attended the parliamentary session, 55 of whom supported the legislative initiative, while 30 voted against and four abstained.

The Social Democratic Party initiated the amendments to the Constitution to attract young people to the political decision-making process and to achieve a demographically balanced voter base.

The next local elections are due to take place in Estonia in 2017.
