Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said Thursday that an international tribunal may be created to bring charges against those responsible for the crash of the Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight over Ukraine.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 crashed over the Donetsk region in southeastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board. The Kiev government forces and local independence supporters were fighting in the area at the time, and traded blame for the incident.

“The Prosecutor’s investigation is moving along quite actively. Based on this, we will decide in the next few months on inviting countries to help find the best mechanism for a [criminal] investigation on the national level or create a joint court with the countries,” Koenders said during a European Parliament session in Brussels.

The DSB final report into the crash, released in mid-October, said a surface-to-air missile exploded near the passenger aircraft’s left side.

Earlier in the day, Russia's civil aviation regulator Rosaviatsia said that new facts obtained by Russian experts through an additional study confirm that some conclusions of the Dutch final report on the MH17 crash in Ukraine were unsubstantiated and inaccurate.

In July 2015, Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution, submitted by Malaysia, to create an international tribunal on the crash. Russia has repeatedly stressed that the initiative to establish a tribunal is premature and counterproductive, as back then the Dutch Safety Board, the main investigator into the case, still had to release a final report into the crash.
