German Police Suspect 3 Over New Year's Eve Assaults in Cologne

Germany's police have identified the first three suspects after a number of sexual assaults on women near the Cologne Central Station on New Year's Eve, Interior Minister of North-Rhine Westphalia Ralf Jaeger said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On New Year's Eve, dozens of women in Cologne were robbed, threatened and sexually assaulted by small groups of aggressive men allegedly of Arab and North African origin.

Cologne Citizens Protest Against New Year Gang Assaults on Women
Jaeger said police had not made any arrests yet, the Bild newspaper reported.

According to the media outlet, the law enforcement authorities in Cologne have received about 100 criminal complaints related to the case.

Police of Hamburg said earlier in the day that 53 criminal complaints had been made by now, the newspaper reported, with 39 cases related to sexual harassment, and the other 14 to a robbery or a theft.

Several similar New Year's Eve incidents mostly related to sexual harassment were reported in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Berlin.
