MOSCOW (Sputnik) — There are 841 men, 64 women and some 20 children among those rescued, according to the Adnkronos news agency.
Most of the rescued refugees are reportedly from North African countries. All of them were sent to Palermo, the agency said.
Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing conflict-torn countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of safety and refuge in Europe.
The EU border agency Frontex has detected 1.55 million illegal border crossings since the beginning of 2015.
