A shipwreck near the Greek island of Farmakonisi has killed 10 people, including five children, local media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Skai TV broadcaster, the boat sank with a total of 25 people aboard. Four men and one woman were among the victims.

Thirteen people has been rescued, while two are still missing, the broadcaster reported. The search and rescue operation involves a helicopter, a patrol boat and private vessels.

The Greek island of Farmakonisi is located in the Aegean Sea near the Turkish coast.

The European Union has been experiencing a major migrant crisis, with over 990,000 migrants having reached European shores by sea so far this year, according to the recent reports by the International Organization for Migration.

Earlier in December, Greece asked the EU border agency Frontex to provide additional assistance in the Aegean islands particularly affected by the ongoing migrant crisis.
