PRAGUE (Sputnik) – Prague will speak against the Nord Stream 2 gas project between Russia and Germany during the ongoing EU summit, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said Thursday.
"The Czech Republic does not support the Nord Stream 2 project and I will state this at the session of the European Council," Sobotka told reporters.
The Czech prime minister added that the project would reduce the strategic importance of Central Europe, through which a significant portion of Russian gas is being transported.
The Nord Stream 2 is the gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea, which is expected to provide an additional route for the Russian gas to Germany, bypassing the three Baltic countries and Poland.
The project plans to use the original Nord Stream pipeline for 86 percent of the route before branching off. It will be able to provide up to 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas supplies to Europe.
