MOSCOW (Sputnik) — This comes after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced in his state of the union address in September that a new border service – in addition to existing Frontex agency – would be created before the end of the year.
The motion was backed by EU leaders after the informal meeting on migration on September 23. Some countries, including Poland, where Frontex is based, are critical of the proposal.
Warsaw fears that the mandate of the new border guard force will go as far as allowing deployment without consent of the host country.
The European Union has been grappling with an escalating refugee crisis since the start of 2015. In his address on September 9, Juncker stressed that a unified refugee policy required stronger joint efforts to secure the bloc’s external borders.
