Estonian Parliament Passes Budget for 2016, Increases Defense Spending

Estonian Parliament passed on Wednesday the budget for the next year, increasing defense spending by nearly 9 percent, press service of the parliament said in a statement.

TALLINN (Sputnik) — Country's defense spending is expected to grow by almost 9 percent, or 39 million euros, and will stand at 451 million euros.

"The state budget was supported by 58 lawmakers, 40 voted against… The budget amounts 8.9 billion of euros [some $9.7 billion] that is 358 million euros bigger…than in 2015," the statement said.

Estonian military spending is expected to amount 2.07 percent of country's GDP in 2016, allowing it to fulfill the NATO requirements to allocate at least 2 percent of member states GDP to defense annually.

On September 17, Estonian Minister of Finance Sven Sester said that country's budget would be increased by 26 million euro.
