Russian policemen handed over a Belgian Malinois puppy named Dobrynya to their French colleagues in Moscow. The K-9 member is expected to take the place of the 7-year-old police dog named Diesel, killed by terrorists during a French police raid in Saint-Nazaire on November 18.

During the ceremony in the French embassy in Moscow, Russian Deputy Interior Minister Igor Zubov expressed hope that Dobrynya will serve as a sentinel of justice for a long time in the ranks of the French police.

“The dog is not just a gift. We are sending one of our own to serve in the French Interior Ministry. We have warm relations with France.”

In his turn, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve thanked Russia and emphasized that Paris was eager to embrace the new K-9 unit.

“The French will be very excited when this dog arrives in Paris. This is a gesture from the heart. I want you to know that Dobrynya will play a big role in the friendship between the peoples of Russia and France.”

Dobrynya is named after an epic and heroic Russian knight, embodying strength, kindness, military virtue and selfless help. The Russian Interior Ministry underscored that the puppy was handed over to France “in solidarity with the French people and police and their fight against terrorism.”
