Thousands of Greeks took part in the second 24-hour nationwide general strike under the Syriza-led government to protest against new austerity measures, media reported Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Thousands of Greeks took part in the second 24-hour nationwide general strike under the Syriza-led government to protest against new austerity measures, media reported Thursday.

Strikes have been held in Greece since November 12.

The action was called by the country’s two major labor unions, representing public and private-sector employees.

The walkout disrupted public services across the country, resulting in the cancellation of a number of domestic flights and halting rail, shipping and ferry operations, according to The New York Times.

Greek workers, pensioners and the unemployed took to the streets across the country to voice their discontent over pension reforms demanded as part of Greece's third international bailout, as well as other rigid austerity measures stipulated in the government's budget.

Greek parliamentarians are expected to vote on the 2016 budget on Saturday, December 5.

The unpopular reforms come in return for an 86-billion-euro ($91 billion) bailout package, needed to keep Greece solvent.
