UK Home Secretary Theresa May will call on Wednesday for increased diversity in the ranks of police, especially in a larger number of female police officers.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Theresa May is expected to make a speech at an event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the first women in UK police forces.

"While we have come a long way, we must go further if we are to ensure greater diversity and truly modern police forces that reflect the communities they serve," May is expected to say, quoted by The Telegraph.

May added that the United Kingdom has the highest proportion of female officers in its history.

According to the UK government, there were 35,738 female, or 28.2 percent of the total, police officers in the country as of March 31. The proportion of female police officers in senior ranks was 21.4 percent.
