UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The climate conference, also known as COP21, is expected to gather more than 130 heads of state and government who will discuss a deal to cut carbon emissions.

"The Secretary-General and the President discussed extensively the status of the negotiations for the adoption of an agreement in Paris, identifying key issues still under discussion and considering ways forward. They agreed that failure to reach an agreement was not an option and would have disastrous consequences," the statement reads.

Paris will host the 21st UN Climate Change Conference from November 30 to December 11. The conference aims to reach a legally binding agreement on climate change to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.

A climate conference in Copenhagen in 2009 ended in a diplomatic impasse due to lack of understanding between the parties. No legally binding commitments were taken following the talks in the Danish capital.
