Germany supports France in the fight against terrorism, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik)  France expanded its airstrikes in Syria against the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist group after the extremists claimed responsibility for a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, which killed 130 people.

“We are mourning together with France for victims of the terror, we stand together with France on the side of the fight against terror,” Merkel said in the country’s parliament.

France is participating in a coalition of 65 countries, led by the United States, conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Syria and Iraq.

This week, French President Francois Hollande is visiting the leaders of the United States, France, Russia, Italy and the UK to reach an agreement on a broad anti-ISIL military operation in Syria.
