STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The border checks were introduced from November 12 to November 21, in a response to a record flow of refugees into the country.
"Today the government has taken a decision to extend the border control until December 11 inclusive," Lofven told reporters in Stockholm.
The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive influx of refugees from the conflict-torn countries of Middle East and North Africa into Europe.
On November 5, Sweden’s Minister for Migration Morgan Johansson said that the country could no longer guarantee accommodation for asylum seekers, and asked refugees in Germany, willing to move to Sweden, to stay there.
Sweden has received more than 100,000 refugees from January 2015, and is expected to accept up to 190,000 asylum seekers by the end of the year, according to the Swedish Migration Board.
