LONDON (Sputnik) – The United Kingdom is planning to at least double its aviation security funding within five years, 10 Downing Street said in a statement Monday.
"Ministers are expected to endorse a proposal, already backed by the Prime Minister, to more than double Government spending on aviation security over this Parliament," the statement read.
The new funding would provide for extra aviation security experts, more training and equipment to other countries and research into screening technology.
The current annual spending on aviation security stands at 9 million pounds (almost $14 million).
UK Aviation Security Boosting Comes After Russian A321 Crash in Egypt
The UK move to boost aviation security comes after the crash of the Russian A321 plane in Egypt, which London believes to have been caused by a bomb, 10 Downing Street said.
"The Government is also planning a step change in its approach to aviation security following the Russian Metrojet [Kogalymavia] disaster in Egypt a fortnight ago, which we believe was brought down by a bomb and that there is a significant possibility that ISIL [Islamic State] were behind it," the statement read.
