MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The man was, according to police, planning to attack the base on the Mediterranean coast but was arrested on October 29, the interior ministry said Tuesday.
The French national was under scrutiny since summer 2014, when he allegedly began posting Facebook messages in support of mercenaries engaged in Syria and Iraq under Islamic State jihadist group banner after being radicalized by the militant group, the communique said.
The Toulon naval base is home to nearly 12,000 people and a number of ships, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and nuclear submarines.
The ministry said in its communique that the French authorities have made 370 arrests this year, in a wider effort to counter a terrorism threat in France following two high-profile attacks that killed some 20 in the country in early 2015.
