Belgian authorities, beginning January 2016, will revoke travel passports of citizens suspected of intending to go to Syria to join militant groups, media reported Monday.

ISIL is a violent extremist group in control of large areas of Syria and Iraq. The group is notorious for its brutality and many human rights atrocities. ISIL is known to use online social networks to recruit young people from around the world.

According to various sources, up to 440 Belgian citizens have joined extremist groups to fight the government in Syria.
