MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Calderstones facility in Lancashire will be shut down after the inspectors found "serious deficiencies" in hygiene and quality of care, as well as staffing shortages. Some patients at the hospital will be cared for in their homes, while others will be transferred to other facilities, the BBC stated.
According to the broadcaster, there were 2,595 people with learning difficulties receiving inpatient care as of late September, and this number would be halved as part of the three-year plan. Hospital units will be shut down, while almost $70 million will be invested into community care.
The BBC claims that the measures are a response to its 2012 investigation of the Winterbourne View facility. Six care workers were jailed and five more received suspended sentences as they were found guilty of being violent towards the patients, having slapped them, pulled their hair and trapped them under chairs.
