The Latvian Defense Ministry to announce legislative amendments permitting the county's armed forces shoot down UAVs over strategic sites.

RIGA (Sputnik) – The Latvian Defense Ministry has developed legislative amendments to permit the county's armed forces shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) over strategic sites, local media reported Tuesday.

"With the permission of the high command, Latvian soldiers may open fire from available weapons to shoot down intruders or force them to land," the Delfi news portal reported, citing a Latvian Defense Ministry document.

The document, to be announced at a State Secretaries meeting on Thursday, asserts that drones threaten military airfields and air ranges, and serve to gather intelligence on strategic Latvian sites.

It is claimed in the document that a number of incidents have been registered of drones violating restricted airspace.
