MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Three-week anti-government protests outside the parliament building in Podgorica ended in clashes on Saturday as police cleared the main street from tents. Police said four officers were injured and 15 people were detained in the process.
"We expect the police civil control council and the interior ministry to submit a report on the events that took place," Ranko Krivokapic said as quoted by the Cafe Del Montenegro online news portal.
Krivokapic was scheduled to hold an expanded 12-member session of the presidential collegium to address the current situation earlier on Sunday.
The European Union delegation in Podgorica called on the Montenegrin leadership to effectively investigate the events.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday it regretted the latest violence in the face of expedited accession of Montenegro to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
On Monday, the United States announced that it was prepared to extend an invitation to Montenegro to join NATO during the December foreign ministers meeting. Washington’s invitation is subject to continued reforms in Montenegro and working to increase popular support for membership in the military alliance.
