According to the Zeit newspaper, KBA requested from Volkswagen “to order the necessary measures to ensure that the vehicles in production are brought into conformity with the approved type.”
If the car manufacturer does not comply with the request, type approval of the affected cars could be withdrawn and it would be illegal to sell or move the vehicles, the media reported, citing the regulation.
Last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency filed a complaint against Volkswagen, accusing the company of having built in cheating devices that allowed the passenger cars to pass US emissions tests.
According to the company's internal evaluation, Volkswagen’s diesel cars are emitting up to 20 times more greenhouse gases than the declared amount.
A number of countries across the European Union, along with Canada, India and South Korea have launched investigations to determine whether Volkswagen vehicles in their country have been fitted with this particular software, while Switzerland has reportedly banned the sale of the company’s diesel-engine vehicles which could have the cheating devices installed.
