BELGRADE (Sputnik) — Serbia is prepared to participate in the European Union’s quota system for resettling refugees within the bloc, but has not received a corresponding proposal, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said Friday.
"We are ready to take on this responsibility, but we are not an EU member state, so we didn’t get a quota," Vucic told reporters after his meeting with European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.
Vucic added that Serbia considers itself part of the European community and wants to help the bloc resolve a massive refugee crisis by receiving a small number of refugees from the Middle East and North Africa.
Earlier this week, EU interior ministers approved a redistribution plan to relocate 120,000 refugees and asylum seekers, residing mainly in Italy and Greece, within the European Union.
