The tombstones of Soviet Army soldiers who died liberating Poland from Nazi invaders during WWII have been defaced in eastern Poland, Polish radio reported Friday.

“Each of the more than fifty gravestones was defaced and their red stars all smashed, Radio Bialystok reported.

Authorities were alerted by the head of the local municipality at Milejczyce a village in the country’s eastern Siemiatycze County.

Police are looking for the perpetrators.

In Poland, desecration of burial places is punishable by up to five years behind bars.

Buried in the local cemetery at Milejczyce are over 1,600 Soviet Army soldiers who died liberating Poland from Nazi occupation during the Second World War.
