Hungary has placed the first kilometer (0.6 miles) of barbed wire along its border with Slovenia in an attempt to protect its frontier from a rising flow of refugees, Slovenian Delo newspaper reported Friday.

BELGRADE (Sputnik) — This is the first time a wall has been built between the two countries within the borderless Schengen Area.

Earlier in September, Hungary completed the construction of a 108-mile fence on the country’s southern border with Serbia and on a 25-mile stretch of its border with Croatia.

Many refugees fleeing violence and poverty in the war-torn Middle East and North Africa transit the Balkans for more prosperous countries in Western Europe.

According to the European Commission, over 500,000 undocumented immigrants have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015.
