The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) calls on the EU member-states to change their approach to the refugee crisis, especially because migration could bring about economic development and social benefits for Europe, OSCE media officer Shiv Sharma told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova — The spokesman underlined that most of the OSCE's work is dedicated to addressing sources of insecurity and promoting tolerance in host societies.

"We can start changing the narrative on migration by recognizing migrants and refugees not only as people in need, but also as people with skills and something to offer, who spark innovation, spread ideas, and foster economic change while supporting cultural exchange," Sharma said.

"Our executive structures have developed unique expertise in migration-related areas over the years, from border management to strategies to fight human trafficking," Sharma said, adding that the OSCE is ready to support the participating states to build on their capacities in these fields.

Last week, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA) closed its Fall Session in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, by issuing a joint statement on the ways and means of dealing with mass migration into Europe.

The proposal addresses the need to set up legal and safe travel corridors, humanitarian visas, settlement programs and safe return protocols and called for international solidarity in efforts to break up human trafficking networks. The joint statement also supports the idea of creating an international conference on the migrant crisis.
