Petro Poroshenko and Jens Stoltenberg attended the opening ceremony of the international Ukraine-2015 rescuer exercises.

KIEV (Sputnik) — President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday attended the opening ceremony of the international Ukraine-2015 rescuer exercises in Ukraine’s western Lviv Region, broadcast live on local television.

The Ukraine-2015 exercises, aimed at practising cleanup operations after emergency situations, are scheduled to be held on September 21-25.

The exercises have been planned within the framework of the 2015 program of Ukraine-NATO cooperation, the so-called Partnership for Peace, and are aimed at deepening combined efforts between the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations and the alliance in the field of civil protection.

Speaking at an event to mark their opening, Poroshenko said that the exercises involved 1,100 rescue workers from 34 countries in Europe, both Americas and Asia.

According to him, the agenda of the exercises includes a wide range of measures, including the exploration of an area beset by an emergency, carrying out various kinds of complicated rescue work and the full range of medical care from evacuation to the provision of specialized assistance, according to the president.

There will also be exercises to provide health care using telemedicine, averting accidents at chemically hazardous sites and extinguishing fires, Poroshenko said, as cited by the 112 television channel.

NATO and Ukraine recently reinforced their cooperation. The country’s new military doctrine envisages the resumption of Ukraine's course to join the alliance, according to which, Ukraine must ensure that its armed forces are fully compatible with those of NATO members by 2020.
