Hungary Puts Barbed Wire on Border With Croatia
BUDAPEST (Sputnik) — The recently constructed fence on the Serbian-Hungarian border has proven to be effective in preventing migrants from entering the country, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Monday.

In August, Hungary completed the construction of a 108-mile fence along the country’s southern border with Serbia to deter thousands of undocumented migrants from illegally entering the country on their way to wealthier states of the European Union.

"We have constructed the fence on the border with Serbia and we see that it made sense. The fence proved efficient. That's why we are constructing it [a similar fence] on the border with Croatia," Orban said.

He added that despite the fence, people could legally cross the border at designated checkpoints, provided they have appropriate documentation.

The closure of the Serbian-Hungarian border and the penalties introduced by the Hungarian government for illegally crossing its national frontiers have forced thousands of migrants to reroute from Serbia to neighboring states in their attempt to reach the European Union.

On September 17, Hungary started constructing a fence on its border with Croatia to deter migrants from entering the country from that direction.

Over 500,000 migrants are estimated to have entered the European Union since the beginning of 2015, according to the European Commission.
