John McDonnell, recently appointed by UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn as the shadow head of Treasury, has accused UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne for conducting austerity policies with "immoral" consequences.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) In July, Osborne, a member of the UK Conservative Party, introduced a new budget plan, stipulating cuts to the welfare system, as well as measures to prevent pay increases of more that one percent for public sector workers, in an attempt to eliminate the budget deficit.

"I think some of the policies [Osborne is]… pursuing are immoral. I think the consequences of them are immoral," McDonnell said in an interview with The Observer on Saturday.

McDonnell denied allegations that he did not recognize a budget deficit in the country, but pledged the Labour party would not settle it "on the backs of the poor."

Corbyn, who strongly opposes austerity, was elected as a new Labour leader last week. He appointed McDonnell as the shadow chancellor of the exchequer on September 13.
