PECS (Hungary) (Sputnik) – At least 5,200 refugees have entered Hungary from Croatia since Friday, police of the Nograd region said Saturday.
"Some 5,200 refugees have crossed Croatia-Serbia border over the past day and the beginning of today," a police source told RIA Novosti.
The source stressed that Croatian authorities were unable to handle the refugee influx, therefore they partially transferred migrants to Hungary.
The closure of the Serbian-Hungarian border and the penalties introduced on Tuesday by the Hungarian government for illegal border crossing have forced thousands of migrants to reroute from Serbia through Croatia and Slovenia in their attempts to reach wealthier EU states.
Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said on Friday that his country had reached its limits to register and host all the refugees entering Croatia, and therefore decided to transport them to its external borders by bus.
Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto condemned Croatia's decision to send migrants to Hungary, saying the move was unacceptable.
