BELGRADE (Sputnik) — The move comes as Austria’s Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner said earlier in the day that local police had been put on standby as the nation prepared to impose checks on its border with Slovenia to control the influx of migrants.
Austria introduced tougher border checks on its eastern border with Hungary earlier this week to control the flow of migrants who had been traveling north through the borderless Schengen Area.
On Tuesday, Hungary’s stricter border control rules took effect on its border with Serbia, shutting migrants’ preferred transit route through the Western Balkans and directing the stream of asylum seekers westward into Croatia and Slovenia.
